There's no single "best" sunscreen — only the best one for what you're doing. Here's what wins where.
Daily face / under makeup
→ Chemical or hybrid, lightweight gel
Blends invisibly, layers under primer, won't pill. Look for "non-comedogenic." Supergoop Unseen or EltaMD UV Clear lead here.
Beach & swimming
→ Water-resistant chemical, SPF 50, 80-min
Sweat and water strip SPF fast. Choose 80-minute resistance, apply generously, reapply after each swim.
Sports / high sweat
→ Chemical lotion + stick for face
Chemical absorbs in rather than running into eyes. A stick handles the hairline. Skip sprays mid-workout.
Sensitive / acne-prone
→ Mineral or hybrid, fragrance-free
Chemical filters trigger most contact dermatitis. Zinc oxide is anti-inflammatory. Check inactive ingredients for fragrance.
Babies & young children
→ Mineral-only, non-nano zinc
Pediatrician standard. No sunscreen under 6 months — use shade and clothing. Sticks help with wriggling toddlers.
Reef-safe travel
→ Non-nano zinc only, no octocrylene
Hawaii bans oxybenzone & octinoxate. "Reef-safe" is unregulated — read actives. Favor lotion over spray; wear a rash guard.
High altitude / snow
→ Mineral or hybrid, SPF 50+
UV rises 4–5% per 1,000 ft; snow reflects up to 80%. Use a stick on the chairlift for nose, cheeks, ears, lips.
Dark skin tones
→ Chemical or tinted mineral w/ iron oxides
Avoid white cast: oxybenzone-free chemical formulas, or tinted minerals. Iron oxides also fight hyperpigmentation.
